Polina Derevich's surgery was a success

News

A week ago. girl was admitted as an inpatient at Children's Hospital Zurich (Moyamoya Center, Switzerland), where she was able to be treated by Dr. Nadia Khan thanks to your kind hearts.

Polina's surgery was scheduled for April 26, 2024. The girl very bravely endured the entire preparatory stage: she did not cry or scream, she moved herself from the bed to the table where she was connected to sensors and devices. She did not even need a special sedative, which is usually given to children so that they do not feel fear during preparation for anesthesia.

The operation lasted about 7 hours. Professor Nadia Khan was able to do as much as possible: she performed two trepanations to bypass the anterior cerebral arteries on the right and left. Pauline did not have suitable vessels in her scalp, so they had to be taken from the dura mater. These vessels are thinner, so they will need more time to «grow» into the brain and form new blood flows.

After the operation, Polina was transferred to the intensive care ward. The next day, on April 27, a control CT scan was performed. After the doctors were convinced that everything was in order, the girl was transferred to a regular ward, where she continues to be under observation.

Any surgery is a stress for the body, both mentally and physiologically. Because of four strokes, Polina had epilepsy attacks. Unfortunately, the stress after the surgery increased their number to 4 per day. Increased doses of antiepileptic drugs were prescribed to Polina even before the surgery to avoid seizures during the intervention and so far remain unchanged.

Polina's great journey under the name «Treatment of Moyamoya's disease» is over. Thank you very much, friends, for another child's life saved.
