Spina Bifida
Age: 1 year and 6 months

Sheri Aknazar is the youngest of four children in a large family from Kazakhstan. His birth was a great joy for the whole family, but along with this joy came a huge challenge. The boy was immediately diagnosed with spina bifida.

From the first weeks of life, the family began researching the condition and looking for ways to help. Through social media support groups, the parents contacted Prof. Shimon Rohkind, one of the leading neurosurgeons who performs micro-neurosurgery on children with this diagnosis at the Assuta Clinic in Israel. He held an online consultation, after which he confirmed the need for urgent surgery. According to the professor, the disease has already begun to affect the baby's legs - Aknazar began to walk on his heels, which indicates the initial stage of deterioration.

When Aknazar's family contacted the Foundation, he was only one year old. He started to crawl actively, explored the world with interest and tried to stand up leaning on furniture - but he could not keep his balance. Despite the diagnosis, he remained a smiling, open and very bright child. We had little time - the operation had to be performed before the boy turned 1.5 years old.

It was necessary to raise 50,000 €. For a family where the father works as an engineer at a thermal power plant and the mother is a nurse on maternity leave, this is a lot of money. Without the help of people who cared, they would not have been able to cope.

Thanks to your support, Aknazar Sheri's collection is closed! His surgery was successful.

On October 19, 2025, Professor Shimon Rockhind performed a surgery. He removed a lipoma caused by a congenital condition called spina bifida. The operation proved to be extremely difficult. The nerve roots of the spinal cord were tightly intertwined with the tissue of the tumor - lipoma. According to the professor, such cases are considered inoperable: surgeons remove the lipoma along with the nerve roots, which leads to severe impairment and disability. But Shimon Rockhind is one of the best specialists in this field. He was able to carefully remove only the abnormal tissue without damaging the roots.
