spina bifida
Age: 14 years old

Margarita Boroday is a girl who never gives up.

Margarita is fourteen. At swimming competitions, she always attracts everyone's attention - the girl has a third sport category. She drives an active wheelchair with such ease and speed that passers-by turn around and smile. In wheelchair dancing she has the first adult category - it is not participation for the sake of participation, but real passion, precision of movements and artistry. She loves to read, learns English, easily beats her peers in chess and consistently brings home straight A's. But behind that open smile and athletic achievements lies a daily struggle with the manifestations of the disease.

Margarita was born with a spinal hernia (spina bifida) in the lumbosacral region. All through the pregnancy, the tests and ultrasound were normal, and the parents were expecting a perfectly healthy child. The diagnosis became known only three weeks before delivery. From that moment on, the family's life became a continuous struggle.

Margarita has already undergone 20 surgeries in her 14 years, mostly orthopedic surgeries, she now has flat feet. She can walk short distances in cutoffs.

Because of urological problems two years ago. Margarita was fitted with two stomas - Mitrofanova and Malone. The first one works stably. The second has become a source of constant torment.

Malone's stoma is regularly inflamed, festering, narrowing. Every movement, every trip to the swimming pool, every dance practice is accompanied by anxiety: whether it will get worse right away. Pain, discomfort, fear of new complications - all this is now a constant part of the girl's life, even when she is laughing and joking with her friends.

Doctors insist on replacing Malone's stoma with a new one in the next few months. This is a highly complex cavity surgery.

Professor Ben Haim from Assuta Medical Center (Israel) has already consulted with the family. He is familiar with Margarita's previous surgeries, has seen all the scans and is ready to take on the case. Thanks to his vast experience, he can perform the intervention on the old scar - this will significantly reduce new tissue damage and give a much better functional result.

The operation costs 24,352 euros. The family lives only on the salary of the father, a car mechanic, and his pension for caring for a disabled child. All the money is spent on medicines, dressing materials, orthoses, a wheelchair, devices and consumables. This amount is absolutely unaffordable for them.
