Spina Bifida
Age: 12 years old

Alisa Batchenko is our new ward. She lives in Volgograd. The girl is struggling with a diagnosis of spina bifida and she really needs our support.

In this disease, a part of the nerves of the spine is unprotected. The body as if «closes» this fragment with a tumor - lipoma. But instead of protection, it presses on the nerves and prevents full physical development.

Because of the lipoma, the girl has to use a catheter and her bladder function is impaired. And soon, if we don't help her in time, she may stop walking altogether.

The first operation: the beginning of the struggle

At 1 year and 4 months old, doctors performed the baby's first spinal cord surgery and removed the tumor.

The girl's mom looks at pictures of her daughter and remembers:

«I was shocked: Alysyonok was smiling on the third day after a major surgery!»

Alice kept that smile and entered adulthood with it, although the surgeries didn't end there - the lipoma came back.

New attempts

2020 - five years had passed since the first operation. The girl was growing up and it seemed that all the difficulties were behind her. Suddenly, her parents noticed that her gait changed and her feet began to deform rapidly.

Of course, the first thing we tried was orthopedic shoes. But the problems were much more serious. We had to have surgery in Volgograd.

Alice has persevered through all the ordeals: several weeks in hospital, two months in a cast, a year of rehabilitation. And, unfortunately, all in vain.

2024 - a new attempt to remove the lipoma. The family believed that this was the last operation, there was so much hope. But the doctors could only take a biopsy.

Alisyonka's mom has seen the light even in this news:

«Thank God the biopsy confirmed it was a lipoma. No malignant signs...»

Condition today

Now Alice is in danger again. The lipoma is growing, compressing the nerve roots, and the girl is losing sensation in her legs. If you waste time, she will be confined to a wheelchair.

A new hope

You have already heard about the Assuta Clinic and its chief wizard, Prof. Shimon Rohkind. He has helped many of our patients and will definitely help Alice. We just need to raise funds for treatment.

There are four players in this story: the strength of Alice, the professionalism of the doctors, you and me, and time - the strongest opponent.

We can't beat Alisyonka's disease completely, but timely treatment will help stop the deterioration. If we succeed, she will continue to walk on her own.
